Due to your many requests, we are announcing in advance that we will have a Free Day of Internet Search coming up on Friday, August 14. It will go from 8:00am on Friday, August 14 through 8:00am on Saturday, August 15.

We are doing this so you can have more time to play with Internet Search and see what it can do. Of course our hope is that you’ll be hooked and just have to sign up for it when the Free Search day is over.

Another announcement will be posted here when the Free Search Day is turned on, as well as in the Message of the Day screen.

Free Search will only work for registered users and only for users of version 5.42 and above.

Someone with username "profilicus" has an automated spambot sending private messages with the subject "Forum administration". Delete this message! It has a link to a Russian website that no doubt will try to install something bad on your computer.

I am in the process of cleaning this up and removing the message from user accounts.

News Server Article Numbers Hitting 32 Bit limit…

High traffic newsgroups are just now reaching a size that cannot be represented in a signed 32 bit number (the number is a little over 2 billion). The latest version of Newsbin (Version 5.52) uses a 64 bit value to store and process article numbers. If you are not running Version 5.52, you may have issues with large newsgroups (namely alt.binaries.boneless) on some servers. So far Astraweb is the only one we know of that has actually hit the limit but, the others are soon to come.

Version 5.52 is a minor incremental release that has some new functionality and also addresses some issues discovered in earlier releases.

  • Implemented new options for downloading with NZB Files. Go under Options/NZB Files to set these the first time you run Newsbin.

  • The Date column in the Post lists and Search tab can now be displayed as relative days or absolute date. Toggle using ctrl-t or with the new option under Options/Advanced.
  • Queuing multiple RAR/PAR sets simultaneously now forces the smallest PAR2 files to download first so AutoPAR will display all the files queued for download immediately.
  • Reverted to the bandwidth limiter code used in Version 5.42

You can review the entire development process in the release notes which are available for viewing after you run the installer.

We have released version 5.51 to address some issues that were uncovered after more people started using version 5.50.

  • Fixed issue where chunks would fail instead of being retried for some types of failures.

  • Fixed issue where chunks fail if downloads are paused long enough for a connection to timeout.
  • Fixed problem where autoloading NZB’s would not load any JPG files into the download list.
  • Fixed problem where Load feature in post list would load the wrong month for any months from 2008.
  • Enabled sort and find while loading headers.

You can review the entire development process by viewing the release notes copied to your installation folder when you install this version.

The release information and download links for the 32 and 64 bit versions are here.
